What the World Was Watching: WWF Superstars – October 23, 1993

Vince McMahon and Jerry Lawler are in the booth, taped from Worcester, Massachusetts. Randy Savage is absent because of the beating suffered at the hands of Crush on Monday Night RAW. Lawler laughs about what happened to Savage and does a funny impression of him.

Opening Contest: Doink the Clown (29-7-3) pins Barry Horowitz after the flying butt splash at 3:27:

Horowitz tries to do the hockey trick of pulling Doink’s jacket over his head to lay in punches but all of his attempted blows miss. McMahon floats the idea of there being multiple Doinks at the Survivor Series. This is not a smooth squash for Doink as he takes lots of time between moves and takes a long time to set up a belly-to-belly suplex.

Gorilla Monsoon’s Update segment hypes the All Americans vs. Foreign Fanatics match at Survivor Series. The Fanatics do an interview with Jim Cornette, Mr. Fuji, and Johnny Polo. They talk about how much they value winning. Cornette dubs the All Americans “Luger’s Losers” which has a fun ring to it. Bret Hart also does a promo, promising that Jerry Lawler will pay for every bad thing he has said about the Hart Family.

Bastion Booger (12-6) pins Ray Roy after the sit-down splash at 1:57:

Booger’s entrance is not shown and the squash is a vehicle for McMahon and Lawler to argue about what will happen to Lawler at Survivor Series. The camera zooms in on Booger’s thighs for his finish, which is something the audience can do without. After the match, Booger rips a brown paper bag in the corner and shoves a Twinkie in his mouth.

Irwin R. Schyster (7-2) defeats Sid Garrison after the Write Off at 2:29:

Garrison was also known as Rip Sawyer. He started his career on the Philadelphia independent circuit in 1988, winning tag belts in various promotions. He and David Casanova wrestled as the Cream Team and feuded in the Mid-Eastern Wrestling Federation against fellow WWF enhancement talents Duane Gill and Barry Hardy. He also worked briefly for ECW in 1992 before the promotion got television exposure.

IRS stops by the video screen to accuse ring announcer Bill Dunn of being a tax cheat for trying to deduct his cheap business suit and toupee. Lawler makes more jokes about the Harts as McMahon floats a future match between Razor Ramon and IRS for the Intercontinental Championship. Lawler squeezes in a funny joke about how the Harts hate Bruce so much they hired an actor to play him in their home movies. Like most IRS matches, the heat is generated from the opening promo and the crowd chanting “Irwin.”

The Rock N’ Roll Express (1-1) defeat Flex Armstrong & Richie Rich when Ricky Morton pins Armstrong after the double dropkick at 2:52:

There are nuances of the Express’ act that McMahon misses, like Gibson draping his body to block the impact of Morton going into the corner. The Heavenly Bodies and Jim Cornette do an insert promo about how the Express keep following Cornette to every stop over the last decade and that the Express are jealous of the Bodies in Smoky Mountain Wrestling. The double dropkick does not make contact with Armstrong but it is good enough for the victory anyway.

There is a new vignette for Jeff Jarrett, who is at Buddy Lee Attractions, a talent agency in Nashville. He rants about how Lee will not give him a chance even though he has the greatest voice in town. His callouts this week are the Undertaker, Mr. Perfect, and the Steiner Brothers.

Diesel (1-0) pins Ralph Mosca after a right hand at 2:37:

Lawler jokes that Helen Hart was one of the bags thrown overboard at the Boston Tea Party. Diesel’s biggest claim to fame at this point is tossing Mabel out of the 20-man battle royal a few weeks ago on Monday Night RAW. He incorporates a big boot into his arsenal, which looks good, to set up the right hand.

Joe Fowler does the Survivor Series Report. A new match announced is Bam Bam Bigelow, Bastion Booger, and the Headshrinkers battling four Doinks. Bigelow’s team does a promo where Afa keeps screaming “Doink!” and Bigelow talks about how he is tired of Doink clowning around. Another match added to the card is Razor Ramon, Mr. Perfect, Marty Jannetty & the 1-2-3 Kid facing Irwin R. Schyster, Adam Bomb, Rick Martel & Diesel.

Non-Title Match: Razor Ramon (Intercontinental Champion) (30-3-2) beats Tony DeVito after the Razor’s Edge at 3:21:

Ramon runs through his moves as Lawler promises that his red knight knows a lot about wrestling He says that Diesel will not be a knight because he is teaming with Irwin R. Schyster. Ramon’s win is his fifteenth-straight singles victory.

After the bell, IRS, Adam Bomb, Rick Martel, and Diesel surround the ring but Mr. Perfect, the 1-2-3 Kid, and Marty Jannetty run out and get into the ring to keep the heels at bay. WWF officials intercede and prevent a battle from breaking out.

Ludvig Borga talks about ending Tatanka’s career on next week’s show.

The Last Word: More of the Survivor Series card is taking shape, creating mystery as to who the various Doinks might be. Next week’s battle between Ludvig Borga and Tatanka carries interest because it puts Tatanka’s year and a half unbeaten streak on the line.
