The conspiracy answer would be some rich, anti-trump nutcase, being that Vince and Trump are good friends, but that's a long way to go for petty political reasons.

Personally, my best guess would be Ari Emanuel, he wanted Vince out, knew Vince was a liability, and knew that he would never leave willingly. He's also Rahm Emanuel's brother, so ruthlessness runs in the family.

We didn't know who was bankrolling Hogan vs Gawker until the dust settled and Gawker was dead, and thanks to the magic of NDAs, we may never know.
