Which came first, Booty or Ass?

Which came first, Ed Leslie's “The Booty Man”, or Billy Gunn's “Mister Ass” gimmick? Was one a shot at the other?
Booty Man was 1996 and Mr. Ass was 1999, so it seems doubtful. My assumption is that Booty Man was a way for Ed Leslie to get as close as legally possible to “Brutus” without saying it.
