What the World Was Watching: WWF Superstars – May 1, 1993

By LScisco on 21 August 2024

For Blog football fans I’ve created three leagues on Yahoo! for the upcoming college and NFL seasons. If you’d like to join here is the info for each league. If you wish to join I’d recommend using your Blog name for the pick set so its easier to track. The two pick’em leagues use confidence points and are based on the spread.

Vince McMahon, Jerry Lawler, and Randy Savage are doing commentary, taped from Tucson, Arizona.

Ray Rougeau interviews the Undertaker and Paul Bearer. Bearer puts over the Undertaker as the most powerful entity in the WWF. He warns Giant Gonzalez that he is headed for him. The Undertaker adds that he will draw power from the souls of the dead and the living to destroy him.

Opening Contest: The Headshrinkers (w/Afa) (11-1-1) defeat Scott Bazo & Bob Young when Fatu pins Bazo after the splash off the top rope at 2:46:

McMahon and Savage discuss how the Nasty Boys will be watching what the Headshrinkers are doing. The squash is background for a discussion of why Lawler does not enter the King of the Ring Tournament. Lawler claims people already know he is “The King of Wrestling” so entering a tournament is meaningless. In response, McMahon and Savage pester him that he is just scared to compete. When the match ends, McMahon announces that WWF Champion Hulk Hogan will defend his title at Yokozuna at The King of the Ring.

A new Smoking Gunns vignette sees them shoot some tin cans, beer bottles, and cacti and that they are not worried about teams like the Headshrinkers, Money Incorporated, or the Beverly Brothers. Their call outs cast the team as a babyface act.

Virgil (3-4) pins the White Shadow after the side Russian leg sweep at 2:02:

Lawler laughs at the idea of Virgil participating in the King of the Ring Tournament. Again, the action is background for Lawler sparring with McMahon and Savage over how he is not scared to enter.

Gene Okerlund does the first King of the Ring Report. It is announced that Bret Hart was given an automatic bid into the tournament by WWF President Jack Tunney. Bret talks about being the number one seed and how he is going to the top with the help of the fans. Yokozuna and Mr. Fuji complain about the loss to Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania IX and argue that Hogan will say “sayonara” to the WWF Championship. On the set of Thunder in Paradise, Hogan is with Brutus Beefcake and Jimmy Hart and says he is in Hollywood due to prior commitments. He talks about Yokozuna getting a haircut to look like Fuji after Hogan slams his fat body. This promo did not land. It might have if Hogan was appearing alone but having Beefcake and Hart mug for the camera made Hogan look cheap.

King of the Ring Qualifying Match: Doink the Clown (13-2) wrestles Mr. Perfect (14-1) to a time-limit draw at 6:38 shown:

There is more play to the illusion aspect of the Doink character as Crush is supposed to do an insert promo but Doink appears instead. After Doink attacks Perfect before the bell, Perfect slows the match down with leg work. The action picks up after a commercial break when Perfect scores near-falls after rolling Doink up numerous times. He catches the evil clown with the Perfectplex off the ropes but before the referee can start counting a pin, the bell rings because the time has expired. Savage is puzzled with that because he was not aware the matches had a time limit. It is unclear whether the result eliminates both men from the tournament. Rating: **

Gorilla Monsoon’s Update recaps last week’s interactions between Tatanka and Bam Bam Bigelow. Bigelow holds up a plastic bag with some of Tatanka’s hair and laughs about scalping him. Tatanka yells about how his red hair signifies the blood of the Native American people and that a fire will burn inside of him until he gets revenge.

Typhoon (6-4) pins Larry Ludden after the Tidal Wave at 2:30:

Lawler scoffs at the idea of Typhoon being in the King of the Ring Tournament too because no throne would be big enough for him to sit on. The announcers hype the Tatanka-Bigelow feud instead of paying attention to what Typhoon is doing.

Lex Luger comes to the ring for the last squash match of the show. McMahon tells fans that Mr. Perfect and Doink the Clown are still in the running to enter the King of the Ring but neither has spot in the tournament because neither won today’s match. After Luger poses in the mirror, Terry Zeller does the same and gets knocked out by Luger’s running forearm. That cancels the match. When the referee refuses to get Zeller out of the ring, Luger kicks the jobber to the floor himself. This was great heeling by Luger.

Razor Ramon tells El Matador to bring his best effort next week. El Matador guarantees that he is going to come after him and put it to him.

Tune in next week to see a six-man tag team match pitting the Nasty Boys & Kamala against Money Incorporated & Mr. Hughes! Also, El Matador wrestles Razor Ramon in a King of the Ring qualifier!

The Last Word: The King of the Ring card is taking shape, featuring a rematch for the WWF Championship and Bret Hart as the first tournament entrant. Since Lex Luger has a qualifier on Wrestling Challenge, one would believe that the tournament could set up a clash between the two, who are locked in a post-WrestleMania feud. Questions remain about the status of Mr. Perfect and Doink. Neither has been disqualified from the tournament but is one to believe their status is left to the discretion of WWF President Jack Tunney?

Up Next: Wrestling Challenge for May 2!
