Wrestling Mascots
By Scott Keith on 17 July 2024
Hello,
Jim Cornette likes to knock on Orange Cassidy by calling him “AEW's mascot.” I have been thinking about what other promotions and eras had their own mascots, that wrestler that best exemplified the style of the product. Here are the ones I can think of and was curious of yours
ECW – Sandman: Violent, edgy gimmicks for violent, edgy matches that wouldn't have made it in any other period prior
Mid-South – Jim Duggan: Big hosses that were all masculine manly-men
New Generation – Sparkplug Holly: Occupation-driven gimmicks with solid workers who were hampered by said gimmicks
Attitude Era – Val Venis or Godfather: Risky, edgy gimmicks that were watered down ECW gimmicks that appealed to young men and edgelords
ROH (under Carey Silkin) – Bryan Danielson: Forward-thinking Workhorses that emphasized pushing moves and matches into a new era
For New Gen I’ll go with Diesel, where characters are created and then assigned to wrestlers regardless of their strengths and real personalities.
