What the World Was Watching: WWF Wrestling Challenge – March 28, 1993

By LScisco on 17 July 2024

Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan call another episode of Wrestling Challenge, starting a new taping from Augusta, Georgia. According to thehistoryofwwe.com, the taping took place on March 9 and attracted a sellout crowd of 8,000.

Opening Contest: Mr. Perfect (8-0) beats the Brooklyn Brawler with the Perfectplex at 2:21:

Heenan insists that he will not be wearing a toga at WrestleMania. Lex Luger does an insert promo about how the enjoyment of his body will be Perfect’s demise. The Brawler throws a few forearms but going to the top rope is a mistake. Perfect throws him off and hits the Perfectplex after the Brawler puts his head down too early on an Irish whip.

Doink the Clown (8-1) beats Tom Jones via submission to the stump puller at 2:15:

Doink comes to the ring with what looks like an ice cream cone. However, it is a toy that he uses to blast ring attendance Jack Doan in the eye with before the match. Doink plants Jones with a DDT and sets up the stump puller with a back suplex.

Bam Bam Bigelow (13-0) pins Joey Maggs after the flying headbutt at 3:13:

Bigelow has a big clash with the Undertaker later tonight on the March to WrestleMania IX special. The Beast from the East spams falling headbutts as Kamala and Slick appear in the split screen and talk about teaching Bigelow a hard lesson in humility. It is so weird that the WWF decided to book a Bigelow-Kamala match for the card instead of just using that slot on the Kamala-Kim Chee feud, a program that has fallen off the face of the earth over the past month. After that, Heenan makes fun of Kamala’s sounds. Bigelow refuses to pin Maggs after an elbow drop, opting to finish with the flying headbutt.

Gene Okerlund does the WrestleMania IX Report. WWF Tag Team Champions Money Incorporated argue that their opponents have a lot of ring rust. The Mega-Maniacs and Jimmy Hart fire back with another weird promo that kids were sending them money but all they need to do is believe in them. Giant Gonzalez and Harvey Wippleman repeat their promise to bury the Underaker.

The Steiner Brothers (10-0) defeat Glen Ruth & Dale Wolfe when Scott pins Ruth after the Steinerizer at 3:26:

The Headshrinkers and Afa do a split screen promo about how they cannot wait to fight them. Samu and Fatu start hitting each other to put over their viciousness. Poor Ruth draws the short stick as a jobber, wrestling the Steiners for the second time in two months. The Steiners suplex their opponents into submission as Heenan wonders what it would look like if the Steiners did their moves to a little person.

The WrestleMania music video airs. It is funny that Hacksaw Jim Duggan, the Big Bossman, and the Nasty Boys are heavily featured but do not have WrestleMania matches.

Tune in next week for a show from Caesar’s Palace! Appearing are Yokozuna, Mr. Perfect, Giant Gonzalez, and Intercontinental Champion Shawn Michaels!

The Last Word: All of the squashes were fun to watch. That is all that can be said about this episode.
