Isn’t the basic issue the same one that WCW faced? While AEW is nowhere close to being as poorly run as them, WCW caught Vince with his pants down. They ran over him with the NWO while Vince was trotting out hog farmers and plumbers. Once Vince woke up, hit on Stone Cold, DX and Mr. McMahon, it was all she wrote. Albeit WCW managed to kill themselves with their subsequent bad booking.
In this case, WWE was boring as hell in 2018 and 2019. No one cared. Vince and Dunn booked for themselves. AEW gave people what they wanted. Now Vince is gone and Hunter is basically giving people what they want and not turning people off. So what is the point of AEW then? Great matches? Terrific. But there is obviously a limited audience for that.
Yeah I've said before, we thought that people wanted an alternative to WWE, but that's not what they wanted at all. They wanted WWE to be better, and now that WWE is better, there's this whole group of people who don't “need” AEW any longer. So now the more complex question is “What DO those people want?” and there's not really an easy answer to that one.
