The SmarK Rant for WWF Wrestling at the Chase – 01.28.84
OK, so apparently my YouTube playlist source was missing some stuff, and someone was nice enough to step up and fill in the gaps for me with a well timed Google Drive. So it’s back to the Chase Hotel again as we continue on in the post-Hulkamania world.
Taped from St. Louis, MO
Your hosts are Vinnie Mac & Mean Gene
The Masked Superstar v. Bobby Boyer
Superstar takes him down with a headlock to start, but Boyer goes for the leg to escape. Superstar chokes him out in the corner and runs him into the turnbuckle for two. Superstar necks him on the top rope and goes to a chinlock, but Boyer fights out of that, so Superstar puts him down with a headbutt. He tosses Boyer and kicks him in the head from the apron with some hilarious disgust. More abuse on the apron as he won’t let the poor goober into the ring again, but Boyer makes a brief comeback before running into a boot in the corner. Superstar puts him down with a lariat as Boyer sells with convulsions, and a neckbreaker finishes at 6:45.
Adrian Adonis & Dick Murdoch v. Jose Martinez & Craig Carson
I wish that Vince’s name of “The Wrecking Crew” had stuck for the heels instead of the “North-South Connection”. So much more descriptive. So they quickly double-team Carson and Murdoch cranks on the neck, but Carson fights back with shoulderblocks before walking into Dick’s elbow. Over to Adonis, who slugs away in the corner and drops a knee on Carson. Carson manages to tag in the other geek, and Murdoch quickly destroys him with elbows and whips him into Adonis’ boot. Out to the floor, where Adonis runs Martinez into a ringside table, and back in for more punishment from Murdoch. Adonis with a suplex and then he cuts off the ring again by taking Martinez back to the heel corner with an atomic drop. Carson gets a tag and runs wild on the heels for a bit, but Adonis nails him from the apron and Murdoch chokes him out. Adonis with a bulldog across the ring and he catapults Carson right into Murdoch’s fist and then they beat on the poor guy some more. Murdoch hauls Martinez back in and drops him on the top rope, and then they double-team the guy while the other geek protests to the ref. Adonis tosses him and Murdoch stomps on the guy’s fingers while he’s trying to climb back in the ring, and they finally finish this doofus with a spike piledriver and brainbuster from Murdoch at 7:30. Man what a squash, these guys were AWESOME. They should put the tag team titles on them.
Jimmy Snuka v. Butcher Vachon
This is from Championship Wrestling as Vince already starts padding out these tapings with material from his other shows. I give him until April before he gets bored of fulfilling his contractual obligations and makes it a clip show. Superfly with the flying splash at 3:00.
Dick Murdoch & Adrian Adonis join Mean Gene to talk shit about Rocky Johnson & Tony Atlas, but Andre the Giant stops by and they flee. And then Hulk Hogan comes out and Andre pledges that they’re going to be partners. But first, he’s gonna throw Masked Superstar and Big John Studd out of the battle royale that’s coming up. Also participating with be Mr. Fuji & Tiger Chung Lee, and man, they got problems with Jimmy Snuka. Mil Mascaras does a promo in Spanish and then Gene sends him on his way.
Meanwhile, in MSG, we take a look at the Hogan-Sheik match, just like on Championship Wrestling in the same week. Man you cannot say they didn’t give everyone a chance to see that title change.
Jerry Valiant v. James Burke
Kind of a jobber battle here, as Valiant certainly wasn’t beating many guys at this point in his career. Jerry takes him down with a chinlock while the announcers discuss Hulk Hogan’s recent WWF title victory and Vince notes that a lot of people are gunning for Hogan already. Well he’s no MJF but there’s some pretty good challengers lined up I suppose. Valiant with another lengthy chinlock and then he finishes with a half crab at 3:00.
VICTORY CORNER! WITH ROBERT DEBORD!
This week, Jimmy Snuka is awarded a trophy for being the 1983 Most Popular Wrestler of the Year.
Big John Studd v. Jerry Riggs
Studd quickly throws Riggs to the floor and runs him into the post, and then back in for the bearhug to finish at 0:56. Even without doing anything, Piper has nuclear heat managing Studd.
And we finish the show with Mean Gene interviewing Studd and Piper, as Roddy goes on an epic coked up rant against Hulk Hogan and we’re out of time.
Housekeeping note: The battle royale hyped up over the past couple of weeks on this show takes place on the 2/10 Kiel Auditorium taping, and they actually show most of it on All American Wrestling one week, and then the rest on the Chase show on 2/18, including the battle royale itself. I think the AAW episode is part of the YouTube 84 playlist, so we’ll get to that soon enough.
Anyway, surprisingly not much to this week’s episode after such a huge title change a few days previous, but as usual Adonis & Murdoch squashing some geeks steals the show.
