What the World Was Watching: WWF Superstars – July 25, 1992

Vince McMahon and Mr. Perfect are doing commentary, still taped in Glen Falls, New York. McMahon and Perfect do Rolling Stones puns because it is Mick Jagger’s birthday.

Opening Contest: Tatanka (23-0) pins Peter Motts after the Samoan Drop at 1:44:

Motts is reluctant to get into the ring so Tatanka chops him and slingshots him inside. In the split screen, Tatanka tells Rick Martel that he is seeking revenge for his ancestors. Motts oversells in this squash, treating every Tatanka chop like death and it slowed down some of Tatanka’s rhythm. With this win Tatanka passes El Matador for most singles win this year.

A McMahon narrated ad hypes the WBF-WWF tug-of-war that will take place next week on Body Stars.

Gene Okerlund’s Update segment informs fans that there was a tag team title change as the Natural Disasters beat Money Incorporated on Monday night in Worcester, Massachusetts. This match was later released on Coliseum Video’s Grudges, Gripes, and Grunts. Footage shows Okerlund trying to speak to Money Incorporated after the match but he is greeted by a hysterical Jimmy Hart at their locker room door, who screams that Money Incorporated is not going to talk to anyone and that they were robbed in the match. The Disasters do a taped promo where they say they will be champions for a long time and will fight anyone. This was the second time this year that the tag team titles changed hands off-screen. While that was meant to help house show attendance, it continues to take heat away from the division when fans are not seeing its major developments happen on-screen.

Shawn Michaels (w/Sensational Sherri) (20-1) pins Phil Apollo after the Teardrop Suplex at 1:39:

Michaels does not do his mirror bit this week, beating down Apollo with a flying axe handle, superkick, and Teardrop Suplex.

Razor Ramon circles a fountain and pushes someone in it, saying that he just made the man’s dreams come true by giving him a swim. He says he is going to make his dreams come true in the WWF. A good bit that puts Ramon over as a bully with an edge.

Okerlund does the first SummerSlam Report. It is announced that Bret Hart will defend the Intercontinental title against the British Bulldog. Bret says it will be hard to have people cheer against him in Wembley Stadium and says that the Bulldog is married to his sister. The Bulldog rebuts that he is undefeated in England and that the best man between them will win. Another new bout is the Undertaker facing Kamala. The Undertaker and Paul Bearer say they might need a bigger casket to handle Kamala but they will still get his remains to Uganda. And it is announced that Shawn Michaels will clash with Rick Martel. Martel says Michaels is jealous of him because he is surrounded by beautiful women while Michaels has “a truck stop beauty” in his corner with Sensational Sherri. Michaels is not available for comments because he left the building after his squash match earlier in the show.

Nailz (7-0) beats Jason Speed via submission to the chokehold sleeper at 1:14:

After getting patted down, Nailz pounces on Speed and quickly chokes him out. After the bell, Nailz beats up Speed with a nightstick as WWF President Jack Tunney still refuses to do anything about his post-match beatings. Near the end of the segment, Perfect heads to the locker room.

Okerlund hosts a face-to-face segment between WWF Champion Randy Savage and the Ultimate Warrior. The Warrior says that Savage is one of the best but not the best. Savage fires back that he will prove that he is better than the best at SummerSlam. The Warrior talks about wanting to be the WWF champion again and he will realize that dream in England. Savage says he cares about the present and as of right now he is the champion. As the Warrior and Savage pose on the interview podium, Ric Flair and Perfect walk into the ring. Flair alludes to Sting in WCW, telling the Warrior that he has beaten people with paint on their face his whole career. In terms of Savage, Flair and Perfect call him a chicken so Savage runs into the ring and attacks Flair. Perfect takes off his belt and starts choking Savage, so Warrior gets into the ring and drives the heels away. The Warrior takes a moment to admire the WWF Championship Belt he once held and Savage takes issue with the Warrior handing the belt back to him. The two go nose-to-nose as WWF officials pour into the ring to prevent a larger confrontation.

The Beverly Brothers (w/the Genius) (17-2) defeat Red Tyler & Chris Duffy when Beau pins Tyler after the Shaker Heights Spike at 1:55:

In the split screen, the Beverlys and Genius say that Rocco will just become another victim if they bring him to the ring. The idea of the Beverlys giving Rocco a Shaker Heights Spike is humorous. The crowd chants for the Legion of Doom as Blake suplexes Duffy a few times and the Beverlys vanquish Tyler with the Shaker Heights Spike. After the bell, the Beverlys do their post-match painting ritual on Tyler.

The Last Word: This was easily the best Superstars episode since WrestleMania since there was a hot angle concerning the WWF Championship. Randy Savage-Ultimate Warrior was already an interesting match on paper but adding Ric Flair as a wild card to the program makes it even better. The WWF was smart to pivot into new matches for SummerSlam since many of its spring programs were running out of steam. And it is also a novelty for this era that SummerSlam will feature two babyface vs. babyface matches and one heel vs. heel match, helping the pay-per-view live up to its label as a show that fans never thought they would see. The only thing that would make the switch better would have been an announcement from WWF President Jack Tunney about why some of these matches were made.
