The SmarK Rant for Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling – 12.04.82
Taped from Charlotte, NC
Your host is Bob Caudle
Jack Brisco is once again the Mid-Atlantic champion as we kick off the show, having regained it from Paul Jones. Also, Bad Bad Leroy Brown has won the TV title, after I believe winning a battle royal for the vacant title. Oh goody.
Sgt. Slaughter & Don Kernodle join us, and they’ve got footage of that Steamboat & Youngblood match from a couple of weeks ago again, where they mauled Jay Youngblood and may or may not have put him out of wrestling.
Sgt. Slaughter & Don Kernodle v. Ken Hall & Gary Black
Slaughter beats on Black in the corner, and Kernodle comes in and drops a fist on him. Over to Hall, but Sarge tosses him with a slam and drops an elbow on him. Kernodle with a running powerslam and they finish with their backbreaker/flying clothesline combo at 2:49. And they continue on with the cobra clutch on Hall and try to pull a Youngblood on him, but the ref pulls them off to save the guy.
Greg Valentine v. Rick Rudd
Man this Rudd kid is really put together. Some might say ravishing. Valentine beats him down and goes to a facelock, then puts him down with a back elbow and gut wrench slam. I feel like he should try an atomic drop on his Rudd kid for some reason. And then he goes to a spinning toehold to work the knee and finishes with the figure-four, but Roddy Piper hits the ring to attack Valentine before Rudd can give it up, drawing the DQ at 2:30.
Bob Orton & Sweet Brown Sugar join Bob Caudle, and I was confused here because I thought Sweet Brown Sugar was Koko B. Ware, but this is definitely Skip Young, the Texas version of the character.
Sweet Brown Sugar v. Joe Lauren
OH MY. That jobber looks mighty familiar as well. Another muscular young man from Minnesota, probably friends with young Ricky Rudd. Sugar takes him down and works a headscissors on Lauren and then goes after the leg, but Lauren makes the ropes. Lauren works on a headlock and runs Sugar into the turnbuckles, but Sugar puts him down with an atomic drop. Lauren gets some shoulderblocks, but Sugar dropkicks him and takes him down with a flying headscissors into a cradle for the pin at 3:33. And then Lauren went to the theater to watch that new Mel Gibson movie…you know, The Road Warrior. Maybe he should take notes.
Cowboy Bob Orton v. Chuck Connors
Another annoying goddamn thing about the new Network interface is that they don’t list the jobber names anymore and I’m at the mercy of Bob Caudle to get them right. Orton slugs away in the corner and brings him out with a hiptoss for two, and then hits him with a high knee and a running powerslam for two. To the top, and the superplex finishes at 2:52. Bob Orton as a babyface is weird and I’m hoping he turns on Roddy Piper soon and goes back to his proper heel alignment.
Mike Rotundo joins Bob and he wants yet another match with Bad Bad Leroy Brown after losing a bunch of times and getting hurt multiple times. But he’s not someone to run away from a fight and he wants the TV title. Seems like a bad idea but what do I know?
Bad Bad Leroy Brown v. Mike Davis
Mike is still hanging around ringside, so Leroy demands he leave, and Mike agrees to leave if Leroy will sign a championship match with him. So Mike finally goads Leroy into accepting and so the match can begin. Leroy beats on Davis and gets a series of slams before going to a chinlock. He misses a blind charge and Davis makes a brief comeback, but Brown drops the elbow on him for the pin at 3:20.
Paul Jones wants to clarify that Jack Brisco is a thief who stole his title. And he needs a belt! Also Jos Leduc is the champion of the TV all over the world.
Jos Leduc, Gene Anderson & Paul Jones v. King Parsons, Ron Ritchie & Johnny Weaver
Leduc overpowers Ron and brings him into the corner, and Gene works him over a bit, but Johnny Weaver comes in and slugs it out in the battle of your drunk uncles. Over to Parsons, but Paul Jones cuts him off and Leduc hits a dropkick! You don’t see that from Leduc very often. The heels cut off Parsons again and Leduc gets a slam, and it’s back to the heel corner for more abuse. Ritchie gets a hot tag and makes a comeback, and Weaver takes Gene down and drops a knee on him for two. And then the babyfaces do some fast tags and triple-team the arm, but then Leduc comes in again and cuts off Ritchie by slugging him down. He slams Ritchie onto Paul’s knee, and the deathlock finishes at 6:49.
Oliver Humperdink is sick of hearing about Piper’s Palace and especially Jimmy Valiant. And Jos Leduc does a psychotic promo about how Jimmy likes to bite people and he will not be bitten by anyone, especially Jimmy Valiant. Also the people are behind Paul Jones, sending him cards and letters of support after he was cheated out of the Mid-Atlantic title by that cheating Jack Brisco. But on the bright side, Leroy Brown is the TV champion and he’ll soon deal with the annoyance of Mike Rotundo’s constant challenges.
Some very intriguing enhancement talent this week.
