Some of the Superstars intro has been updated to remove Virgil holding the Million Dollar Championship Belt.
Vince McMahon and Mr. Perfect are the announcers, still broadcasting from New Haven, Connecticut. Perfect announces that Ric Flair will be entering the Royal Rumble.
Opening Contest: The Bushwhackers (20-4) defeat Barry Hardy & Brian Donahue when Butch pins Hardy after the double stomachbreaker at 2:32:
Jamison has a Bushwhacker hat on and does the Bushwhacker arm swing. The Bushwhackers take a liking to that, so they pull him out of the crowd and put him in their corner as a manager. McMahon is amazed during the match that the Bushwhackers are following Jamison’s instructions. Donahue comes close to winning the match for his team by throwing a clothesline but Butch ducks it, decks his opponent, and the rout is on from there as Jamison eats a sandwich and McMahon and Perfect talk about Flair and Roddy Piper’s odds in the Royal Rumble. After the match, Jamison gets in the ring and marches with the Bushwhackers.
Gene Okerlund’s Update segment hypes The Royal Rumble on January 19. Okerlund announces that Randy Savage has entered the Rumble. Footage is shown of Jake Roberts’ extracurriculars against Savage and Elizabeth at This Tuesday in Texas. Okerlund warns Roberts that he is going to have to face Savage soon.
Jake Roberts (24-2) pins Ross Greenberg after the DDT at 2:48:
Greenberg takes an amazing bump over the top rope, flying out of the ring and landing on his back without touching the ropes at all. Roberts taunts fans who want to see the DDT, reluctantly using it to get the three count.
In the Event Center, Shawn Michaels hijacks a Rockers promo to talk about how he has some big singles matches coming up and how he is ready for them.
Virgil’s squash from Prime Time Wrestling is shown.
The Natural Disasters (w/Jimmy Hart) (17-0) beat Bill Pierce & Kevin Drake when Typhoon pins Pierce after the Tidal Wave at 4:16:
Pierce makes the mistake of thinking he can lockup on equal terms with the Earthquake and it is all downhill for him from there. In a fun spot, Earthquake holds Pierce in place so that he can be sandwiched between himself and Typhoon, who comes off the ropes to complete the move. Drake gets off relatively easily, never tagging in and only having to take a double shoulder block from the Disasters. The Disasters finish a long squash by doing each of their finishers on Pierce.
Gene Okerlund and Classie Freddie Blassie present Intercontinental Champion Bret Hart the Wrestler of the Year Award. Bret gets a big trophy for it, which looks exactly like the one he destroyed at WrestleMania IV. It is a weird segment as Bret is recognized, comes out and gets the trophy, and the show goes to a commercial break without him giving any comments or thanks.
El Matador (12-2) pins Chris Duffy after El Paso Del Muerte at 2:20:
McMahon hypes a match that El Matador is having against the Berzerker on Prime Time Wrestling this Monday. Perfect makes fun of Santana doing bullfighting signs with his hands to set up a running knee lift and El Paso del Muerte.
Colonel Mustafa and General Adnan are shown arguing backstage as they play WWF WrestleMania Challenge.
New entrants for the Royal Rumble are revealed. The Texas Tornado says he is going to walk out of the match as champion, the Warlord and Harvey Wippleman argue that no superstar can match his power, Virgil argues that he is going to punch his way through the Rumble and will go through Roddy Piper if he has to, Irwin R. Schyster looks forward to auditing superstars, the British Bulldog says that the quest will be tough but he is walking out of the match as champion, the Berzerker and Mr. Fuji argue that the Rumble is the Berzerker’s kind of match, Ric Flair puts over how winning the title means more money and women for him, and the Undertaker and Paul Bearer promise to put the Rumble participants in a mass grave.
The Beverly Brothers (w/the Genius) (16-0-1) beat Sonny Blaze & Jim Arnone when Beau pins Arnone after the Shaker Heights Spike at 2:11:
Jamison has returned to the audience, booing and sticking his tongue out at the Beverlys and Genius. For whatever reason, Blaze sells poorly for the Beverlys, just laying on the canvas when he is hit and his leg is worked over. Blake gives Arnone an overhead belly-to-belly suplex and the Beverlys finish him with a Shaker Heights Spike shortly thereafter.
After the bell, the Beverlys and Genius confront Jamison and try to pull him out of the crowd. The Bushwhackers march down and make the save. The Bushwhackers pull Jamison out of the crowd a second time and walk back to the locker room with him.
Tune in next week to see the Rockers, Intercontinental Champion Bret Hart, Hacksaw Jim Duggan & Sergeant Slaughter, the Undertaker, and Ric Flair in action!
The Last Word: The WWF has gone into Royal Rumble hype mode more than a month early. Vince McMahon spent much of the telecast hyping each wrestler as a possible Rumble entrant and gauged their chances. The Beverly Brothers are becoming a busy act, feuding simultaneously with the New Foundation and the Bushwhackers. Since The Royal Rumble will be loaded with single superstars, it stands to reason that a lot of the undercard will be populated by tag team matches since the WWF did not have many wrestlers do “double duty” on the show in this era.
