What the World Was Watching: WWF Superstars – October 20, 1990

Vince McMahon and Roddy Piper are in the booth, concluding the taping cycle in Toledo, Ohio.

The Legion of Doom’s squash from Prime Time Wrestling starts the telecast.

Gene Okerlund’s Update segment recaps the Ultimate Warrior making Brother Love dress up like a woman on last week’s Superstars. Randy Savage and Sensational Sherri warn the Warrior that Savage is too much man for him to handle.

Shane Douglas’ squash win on Prime Time Wrestling airs. McMahon and Piper portray it as Douglas’ debut even though he has wrestled eight television matches in his WWF career to this point.

Jake Roberts returns to the ophthalmologist, who removes the bandages on his eyes. While Roberts’ right eye looks normal, his left eye is completely white. The ophthalmologist tells Roberts that his vision will improve a bit over time and he will give him dark sunglasses to aid in his rehabilitation.

Rick Martel hypes the qualities of Arrogance on the Brother Love Show before Brother Love welcomes Rick Rude and Bobby Heenan as this week’s guests. Rude says that he meant everything he said about the Big Bossman’s mother. Heenan complains about the Bossman’s treatment of him several weeks ago on Wrestling Challenge. Rude says he looks forward to being the Bossman’s judge, jury, and executioner and the Bossman is happy to bring his mother along to see it.

Non-Title Match: The Texas Tornado (Intercontinental Champion) (10-0) pins Paul Diamond (1-11) after the discus punch at 1:59:

The Tornado appears to mess the flow of the squash up as he gives Diamond a discus punch after about a minute of action but does not go for the pin. Diamond is slingshotted into the ring post and then the Tornado comes off the ropes for a second big discus punch to remain undefeated.

McMahon and Piper put over the giant egg by the entrance.

Okerlund does the Survivor Series Report. This confirms Heenan’s report from Prime Time Wrestling that Nikolai Volkoff will lead a team called the Alliance that will feature Tito Santana and the Bushwhackers against Sergeant Slaughter’s Mercenary team that will also include Akeem and the Orient Express.

Power & Glory (w/Slick) (12-0) defeat S.D. Jones & J.D. Wolfe when Paul Roma pins Wolfe after the Powerplex at 2:52:

Wolfe wrestled in Memphis in the late 1980s, working as part of the Choir Boys tag team that was managed by Ernest Angel.

The Rockers appear in the split screen and Shawn Michaels says he is back and is looking for revenge. Wolfe takes forever to get into the ring, appearing to anger Paul Roma. McMahon’s attention is taken from the match when he tells fans that Jake Roberts will be on next week’s program as a guest on the Brother Love Show. Power & Glory have perfect timing on the Powerplex, making for a great visual to end the show.

Brother Love and Rick Martel talk about Roberts showing up next week. They laugh about his present condition, with Martel saying that “Seeing is believing.”

Tune in next week to see the debut of the British Bulldog! Also, the Warlord, the Big Bossman, and Demolition will be in action! And Jake Roberts will appear on the Brother Love Show!

The Last Word: The Jake Roberts-Rick Martel feud is an upgrade for where both guys were a few months ago and it plays to each of their strengths as Roberts gets to show his range as a disabled competitor while Martel plays a great arrogant heel. Outside of that angle, there was not much new that came out on this show since most of the matches were recycled from Prime Time. The return of Davey Boy Smith is a positive development, though, as the company needs fresh blood.
