All TV Ratings Matter

Long time reader going on 17-18 years now. Thanks for entertaining us!
My main wrestling group of friends follows all walks of the industry from Raw to Stardom to PWG. We have a couple of very pro-WWE peeps that idolize Vince McMahon and, basically, love whatever he tells them to love and hate anything that can be remotely described as competition. The most used defense is “WWE has the best ratings and they make the most money”.
Those of us who lived through the attitude era in a time where other promotions were really difficult to access were definitely conditioned to view good tv ratings as a badge of honour and metric of success.
In my older age, I've come to wonder (and i'm finally getting to my question for the blog, i promise):
Why should we, the fans, actually care about tv ratings? Why should advertising dollars be more important to fans than say…a good match?
Because then you know which side is winning!
