Let's say everything happens exactly the same up to just before Goldberg kicks Bret Hart and retires him, but Bret ducks, hypothetically leaving him able to work until he is 50 or so. Does he become like Jericho is now, the legendary veteran superstar in the 2nd promotion? Does he go back to Vince at some point?
I think so. Bret was understandably mad for a long time, but ultimately (see what I did there) everyone wants to do business again. Mostly Vince. Bret would have been back by 2003 I’m pretty sure.
