What the World Was Watching: WCW Worldwide – September 16, 1995

19th August 2019 by LScisco
Rants

–Tony Schiavone and Bobby Heenan are in the booth and they are taped from Orlando, Florida.

–Opening Non-Title Match: The Renegade (Television Champion w/Jimmy Hart) (19-0) pins Dave Dalton after the Renegade Splash in 37 seconds:

The Renegade squashes another jobber to hype him for his television title defense against Diamond Dallas Page at Fall Brawl. Heenan hilariously hypes the Renegade’s endurance but that is hard to gauge when he never wrestles for more than a minute in most of his matches.

–Heenan laments how Ric Flair and Arn Anderson are at each other’s throats. He says he could try to mediate but both men are not listening.

–The Blue Bloods (22-4-2) beat Al Phillips & Todd Wilder when Lord Steven Regal makes Phillips submit to the Regal Stretch at 2:56:

Schiavone is at pains to fit the Blue Bloods into the existing WCW tag team title picture, settling on the angle that they are building a new winning streak to get into title contention. The Blue Bloods do a nice double inverted suplex to Phillips and that sets up the Regal Stretch.

–Gene Okerlund interviews Brian Pillman. He gives a generic promo about wanting to defeat Johnny B. Badd and get a shot at Sting’s United States title.

–A WCW news flash tells fans that because of “circumstances outside of WCW’s control” Vader will not appear at Fall Brawl and Lex Luger will take his place. These appear numerous times throughout the broadcast because the show features old Vader promos for the event and Schiavone and Heenan talk about his contribution to WarGames.

–Johnny B. Badd (34-4-2) pins Sledgehammer McGill after the Tutti Frutti at 1:52:

McGill takes some awkward back bumps as Badd flings him around with a monkey flip and arm drag. Badd reverts to the Tutti Frutti for the win.

–In the Fall Brawl Control Center, Harlem Heat and Sister Sherri vow to regain the tag team titles. WCW Tag Team Champions Dick Slater and Bunkhouse Buck along with Colonel Robert Parker pledge that they are ready to walk out of North Carolina with the tag team titles.

–Kevin Sullivan (w/the Shark & Meng) (14-5) beats Mike Legacy after a double stomp at 2:34:

Legacy gets bit by the Shark when Sullivan tosses him to the floor and oversells it, laying there clutching his neck like someone bit him on the jugular vein. Heenan calls Sullivan’s finisher “the Dungeon of Doom Heimlich.”

–Okerlund interviews Arn Anderson. He quizzes Okerlund about whether he ever got in a fight with his brother and uses that to parallel his strained relationship with Ric Flair. Anderson tells Flair that he is Flair’s equal in the ring even if he is less flamboyant than the Nature Boy.

–Ric Flair (10-2) pins Steve Armstrong (0-2) after the figure-four leglock at 6:01:

Armstrong is given a few spurts of offense and some hope spot near-falls, but Flair uses his constant cheating to regain the advantage time and after time. Armstrong dazes Flair after a clothesline against the buckles, but Armstrong’s flying body press eats canvas and the figure-four submits him. Rating: **

–Tune in next week to see the return of Road Warrior Hawk! Also, the Disco Inferno and Kevin Sullivan will be in action!

The Last Word: As a Fall Brawl hype show, this broadcast did its job as the wrestlers in big matches got victories, thereby providing Tony Schiavone and Bobby Heenan chances to talk about the pay-per-view. However, the wrestling was very pedestrian and if you caught Monday Nitro or WCW Saturday Night then there was no reason to watch this week’s episode.
