–Footage of the end of RAW where Razor Ramon and Shawn Michaels had an altercation after Ramon saved Michaels from a beatdown at the hands of Sid.
–Vince McMahon and Dok Hendrix are doing commentary and they are kicking off a new set of tapings in Portland, Maine. According to the historyofwwe.com the tapings drew a crowd of 4,683 fans.
–Opening Contest: Razor Ramon (14-2-1) pins Roy Raymond after a Razor’s Edge at 2:07:
Ramon has not had a squash match in months, so this allows him to beat a jobber senseless and rebuild some of his image to the WWF audience. It also gives McMahon and Hendrix an excuse to talk about SummerSlam and the ladder match Ramon will have against Shawn Michaels. Fans love seeing the Razor’s Edge and Ramon gets a good pop for his win on today’s show.
–Without a Madison Square Garden card to hype, Stan Lane discusses SummerSlam during the Live Event News portion of the show. Instead of calling Razor Ramon and Shawn Michaels’ match a “ladder match,” Lane awkwardly refers to it as a “ladder rules match.” Lane alludes to the British Bulldog’s apparent heel turn at Madison Square Garden but says that the Bulldog has realized that his actions were wrong. The Bulldog apologizes to the fans, saying that he was just tired of hearing “USA” and thought the fans wanted to see Lex Luger more than him. King Mabel delivers a promo that says he hates wrestling in Madison Square Garden and that he looks forward to making the Undertaker his next victim when the WWF comes back to New York City in October.
–Barry Didinski tries to sell fans on a WWF backpack, which you can buy for calling 1-800-TITAN-91 for $29.95 (plus $3.95 shipping & handling)! The backpack comes with a WWF t-shirt, a Diesel cooler, a tape of WWF superstar music, a three month subscription to WWF Magazine, and a free box of Stridex pads. That is probably the best deal that Didinski has offered in his entire WWF run.
–The Blu Brothers (w/Uncle Zebekiah) (12-1-2) beat Tim McNeeny & Paul McDale when Jacob pins McDale after a clothesline-spinebuster combination at 1:53:
McDale also went by the names of Paul Van Dale and Paul Vandello, having made a few appearances for the company in an enhancement role in the late 1980s. This would be his last WWF appearance in a squash match and he eats several boots to the face for his efforts today, taking the fall for his team after a clothesline-spinebuster combination. The quick speed of the squash did a lot to put over the Blus as they head to SummerSlam to face the Smoking Gunns.
–Footage of Henry Godwinn slopping Ted DiBiase on RAW is aired.
–Kama (w/Ted DiBiase) (23-0-1) defeats Bert Centeno after a corner slingshot splash at 1:34:
The Creatures of the Night are at ringside again, with Hendrix arguing that they are starting to go too far by showing up to Kama’s matches. Kama throws Centeno around for a while before finishing him and then tearing up another black wreath.
–As Kama starts to head for the locker room, the male Creature of the Night comes into the ring to gather the pieces of the wreath that Kama shredded. Kama then comes back into the ring and attacks the Creature until WWF officials intervene. When Kama stops the assault the lights flicker and Kama runs to the locker room with DiBiase. In case anyone wants to know who the Creature of the Night was the answer is Doug Basham of future Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) and WWE fame, although some thought it was Shane McMahon at the time.
–A replay of Goldust’s debut promo on RAW is shown.
–Fatu (3-1) pins Phil Apollo after a top rope splash at 2:17:
Fatu tries to wrestle a clean match but Apollo will have none of it, refusing Fatu’s gestures of friendship and slapping him in the face. That is a bad idea, though, as Fatu plants Apollo with a Samoan bulldog and squashes him with a splash to make a difference.
–Dean Douglas provides a midterm report on Shawn Michaels. Douglas defines the term altruistic and complains that Michaels cares more about what the fans think rather than focusing on his matches. This earns Michaels a grade of “IU” for “Inanely Unprepared.”
–Interim WWF President Gorilla Monsoon visits the broadcast team, noting that the Creature of the Night who was assaulted earlier in the show provoked Kama. Still, Monsoon says that Kama should not have retaliated but instead of suspending him or fining him he is going to change the stipulation for the Undertaker-Kama match at SummerSlam from a standard singles match to a casket match.
–King Mabel (w/Sir Mo) (10-1) defeats Bam Bam Bigelow (16-3) after a belly-to-belly suplex at 5:14:
Hendrix makes an astute observation by claiming that Diesel got Bigelow to sign for this match to weaken Mabel for SummerSlam. If Jim Ross was on commentary he would remind fans that this was a slobberknocker as both men rely more on strikes due to each other’s size. That hardly makes for a great encounter, but Bigelow tries to use his agility to keep the bout moving rather than settling into a rest hold affair. Bigelow seems to be on the verge of victory when he knocks Mo off the apron but he slips when trying the flying headbutt and Mabel hits the belly-to-belly to win. The finish made Bigelow look like a dork, but his new role is putting over heel talent that is booked to face Diesel at the next pay-per-view. Rating: *
–A replay of the latest Isaac Yankem vignette is aired.
–Call 1-900-737-4WWF to hear about why Diesel might cost Shawn Michaels the Intercontinental title at SummerSlamand hear about Razor Ramon’s training methods for the ladder match! It will cost you $1.49 per minute and kids gets your parents permission before calling!
–Bob Holly (11-7-1) pins Jason Ahrndt after the Pit Stop Plunge at 3:07:
Scott Davis is the guest fan ring announcer, who is not very enthusiastic about doing his role. During the match Hendrix leaves the booth to go backstage and ask Sir Mo if he caused Bam Bam Bigelow to trip off the top rope at the end of today’s feature match. McMahon puts over how Holly and Hunter-Hearst Helmsley will be a great technical match at SummerSlam, but this squash is pretty dull, with Holly working as if he going to be having a time limit draw with Ahrndt rather than destroying him so he looks better going into the pay-per-view.
–Lane switches gears in the Live Event News segment to discuss the Madison Square Garden card in eight weeks. The Undertaker and Paul Bearer discuss his scheduled bout with King Mabel, with Bearer saying that the Undertaker wants revenge for King of the Ring and the Undertaker echoing those comments.
–Tune in next week to see Bret Hart collide with Rad Radford!
The Last Word: The change in the Undertaker-Kama match gives fans another reason to buy SummerSlam as the company has not aired a casket match since the last Survivor Series when the Undertaker faced Yokozuna. It also signals that it will be the blowoff for the Undertaker-Kama feud, although both men have not had many interactions with each other following King of the Ring. And the company seems to recognize that no one cares about Diesel-Mabel since the hard sell is really directed at the ladder match between Razor Ramon and Shawn Michaels.
